vocational calling

Last month at SPU, the provost gave a very inspirational, grounded, and convicting talk at the New Student Convocation.  He underscored the vocational call of the scholar at a place like SPU: take seriously your academic journey at the beginning, allowing for and engaging 'wandering' as deeper exploration, and keeping in mind that all our work is always pointed toward the reconciliation and healing of others and not merely ourselves.

Those words have stuck with me and I keep thinking that this defines what you all are doing this year in Malawi... Sending you encouragement today to press on in the road ahead...

XOXOXO

  1. Email from Elizabeth:
"Thank you Emily. This is relevant. I think I am constantly in a tension here about being generous with my whole self and also being aware of prudence of wisdom of my actions......
I paid for a mom to take her very sick child to the hospital (less than a dollar) but then was asked by another patient to do the same.
Our house is really full right now with Ben and Beth. Full of good things, good conversation, play and community. But it is not ideal for my introverted nature.
I do feel that "healing of others" is a concept that I don't fully understand.
I know you are praying for me and I am SO grateful for that. My soul feels a bit restless.
