just a glimpse of some of what the Sugar Plum Fairy
will be sending to you at some point in the near future...

so good to talk to you just now... makes this quote mean even more below.

just wanted you to know that the soup below was made with your beans...

a prayer for the darkness...

In case you get this before you go to bed tonight, I am sending you this night prayer because it seems to hit the nail on the head about the way you are feeling overloaded and feeling like there are not enough hours in the day to do all that is needed to do a good job...

(not my picture above, but a great night picture of Seattle... When I saw it,
I thought of you all and our time on the Great Wheel this summer)

The night is dark. Let our fears of the darkness of the world and of our own lives rest in you. The night is quiet. Let the quietness of God’s peace enfold us, all dear to us, and all who have no peace. ~ A New Zealand Prayer Book

HAPPY 28th!!! (one day late!)

Time zones are a bit nutty so I figured it won't hurt to extend the celebration another day to wish Micah a HAPPY 28th!  We wanted to share what we did last night in celebration of Micah man on the 28th... (and I can't help thinking that Taylor's pumpkin that he carved in the shape of a mouse indeed looks a bit like Micah...)

wish you were here -
we had fun booing some neighbors last night
(I'll never forget (and still feel a little bad about it)
when we scared Elizabeth nearly to death doing this when she was home alone unbeknownst to us...)

sermon from Sunday

This is one of the more powerful sermons I've heard in a while...

George shares Jim's story at the end of the sermon... (and he decides to call him Bill...) :)

While George does not get all the details right here as he was adjusting some things for confidentiality-- (with the order of things, with Jim's faith that was indeed present earlier, with the gender of the baby, with the fact that I was not the first one to come alongside (as my parents were),  he still shares the most powerful piece of Jim's story about his statement that he is forgiven and for that he could not be more grateful...

when you get a chance, listen in and imagine it is just like old times as you join us in the balcony at UPC while the kids draw on the 3x5 notecards :)

love...

one more thing to share today.....

inspirational

some inspiration for your day...
(and just so you know, even though the story lines are different,
something like this reminds me of the inspiration your life is to me and to so many.... )

p.s. also just wanted you to know that we are half way through the GIANT bag of beans you gave us...

very, very simple.

There is nothing to be renounced or resisted. Everything can be embraced, but the catch is to cling to nothing. You let it go. You go through life like a knife goes through a done cake, picking up nothing, clinging to nothing, sticking to nothing.

And grounded in that fundamental chastity of your being,

you can then throw yourself out, pour yourself out,

being able to give it all back, even giving back life itself.

Very, very simple.

It only costs everything.

-Cynthia Bourgeault The Wisdom Jesus

I get the sense that your experience there in Blantyre keeps giving you opportunities to pour yourself out, to let go, to cling to nothing...May you experience the freedom in this while also knowing that God is your source of strength when you need to be filled back up and when you need something to hold onto... XOXOXOXO

me and Jess on the long run this morning...
(she is training for the Richland marathon and this was her last long run...
I was the only one who showed up so I just ran the 13 mile loop with her.....
Go team... You were with me in spirit!)

Being Patient Toward All

I read this quote the other day and thought of you with our conversations about mindfulness and accepting life as it comes... As this says below, "Take whatever comes with great trust..."

Be Patient Toward All

"I want to beg you as much as you can, to be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer. Perhaps you do carry within yourself the possibility of shaping and forming as a particularly happy and pure way of living; train yourself to it—but take whatever comes with great trust, and if only it comes out of your own will, out of some need of your innermost being, take it upon yourself and hate nothing."
-Rainer Maria Rilke Letters to a Young Poet

As I was stuck in traffic on 1-5 coming back from a meeting in Renton on Thursday afternoon, I saw this gorgeous rainbow coming down right near the stadium.
It made me smile in the midst of my hour long commute back home from Renton
because the end of the rainbow seemed to be on our normal loop that we run
together, Elizabeth. That's certainly a pot of gold in my book...
(and this time sitting in traffic was a great chance to just practice acceptance and let it be---as the quote talks about above...)

soften us...

in light of some of the reading between the lines of parts of your email yesterday,

I thought this prayer might hit home for you today..... XOXOXOXO

   Soften Us

O living God, soften us!
Let the fire of your love
thaw the frost within us.
Let the light of your justice
sear away our blindness,
Let the grace of your compassion
heal our hardened spirits.
O living God, soften us!
That, flowing with your grace,
we be impelled to face the world
in bold compassion,
that, driven to justice,
we may dare to cry aloud
for the little ones,
the raped, the beaten
the imprisoned, and the hungry.
O living God, soften us!
Sweep us forward
in a Mighty Wave of Mercy
to heal our darkened world.

vocational calling

Last month at SPU, the provost gave a very inspirational, grounded, and convicting talk at the New Student Convocation.  He underscored the vocational call of the scholar at a place like SPU: take seriously your academic journey at the beginning, allowing for and engaging 'wandering' as deeper exploration, and keeping in mind that all our work is always pointed toward the reconciliation and healing of others and not merely ourselves.

Those words have stuck with me and I keep thinking that this defines what you all are doing this year in Malawi... Sending you encouragement today to press on in the road ahead...

XOXOXO

planting bulbs and thinking of you

Last Tuesday, I went over to Tamara's house and we planted 60 tulip bulbs. Yesterday, she came over to our house and we planted tulips, daffodils and crocuses.  She also brought a bag of compost soil to work into some of our current garden area to try to reclaim some of the places that don't seem to be thriving.  I am so thankful for folks like Tamara and for you Bill who have a green thumb who can give me some much needed tips in our little piece of earth here that we are tending.

A sweet memory for me while planting these tulips was that when Anna was almost 2, we planted a bunch of bulbs at our house in Nashville. I explained to her that we were putting these bulbs to sleep under the ground and that they would wake up in the spring.  Anna did not quite understand that it would take some time for them to come up and she kept telling them to "g'up" (get up).

Last week and yesterday, Tamara and I both smiled in saying that when these flowers come up in the spring that it would be a sign that it won't be long until you all come home.
I can't wait for these to bloom in the spring for that very reason!!
XOXOXO

on the way home from church yesterday....

thinking of you...

Small Group

Jason and I made some slight adjustments to our liturgy yesterday in order to make some space to share using the practice of the examen during our gathering times as well. I've copied the new format below.  You all were with us in spirit!

The scriptures from yesterday were the following in case you want to carve some time out to enter into this space with us this week:
Psalm 46
Micah 1:1-9
1 Corinthians 10:1-13
Matthew 16:13-20 (Lectio passage)

Come Let Us Worship the Lord

Call to Worship
O God, come to my assistance
Lord, make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Alleluia!

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life;
to behold the beauty of the Lord and to seek God in His temple.
Psalm 27:4

Confession of Sin
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.  For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen

Silent Confession

Assurance of Pardon
Before God, with the people of God, we have confessed to our brokenness; to the ways we wound our lives, the lives of others, and the life of the world.

God forgives us, Christ renews us, and the Spirit enables us to grow in love.  Amen.

Exchanging the Peace

As forgiven and reconciled people, O Christ, bind us with a bond of love that cannot be broken.
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.

Examen

For what are you most grateful this week? For what are you least grateful this week?

Hear the Word of God

The Lessons & the Psalter

Lectio Divina
Preparation (Silencio)
Read 1st time (Lectio) – Listen for a word or phrase that is addressed to you.
Read 2nd time and reflect (Meditatio)- How does this speak to you? In what way do you hear an invitation from God through this reading?
Read 3rd time and respond (Oratio)- What is your response to God based on what you have heard?
Read 4th time and rest (Contemplatio)- Listen a fourth time and reflect on the passage once again.
Resolve (Incarnatio) – Incarnate (live out) the Word of God

The Collect
Deliver us, Almighty God, from the service of self alone: That we may do the work You have given us to do, in truth and beauty, and for the common good; for the sake of the One Who comes among us as one who serves, the one Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, One God, now and forever. Amen.

The Prayers of the People
We offer prayers for all those with whom we share the Journey: those who have been given to us, and to whom we have been given, those to whom we promised our faithfulness and prayers… especially……..
Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy.

We entrust all who are dear to us to Your never-failing love and care, for this life and for the life to come; knowing that You will do for them far more than we can desire or pray for. Amen.

Choose one song below:

Bring Your best to our worst, bring Your peace to our pain, God of Love, heal Your people.
1.     That none who cry aloud may cry in vain-
2.     That all who doubt may find a deeper faith-
3.     That all who fear may feel your shelt’ring hand-
4.     That guilty ones may know they are forgiven.
5.     That we may be Your hands to heal the world.

God of mercy, hold us in love.
1.     In peace, in peace, we pray to you:
2.     For peace and salvation, we pray to you:
3.     For peace between nations, for peace between peoples:
4.     For us who are gathered to worship and praise you:
5.     For all of your servants who live out your gospel:
6.     For all those who govern, that justice might guide them:
7.     For all those who labor in service to others:
8.     Grant weather that nourishes all of creation:
9.     Keep watch on our loved ones and keep us from danger:
10.  For all the beloved who rest in your mercy:
Help us comfort us, all of our days: Keep us hold us, gracious God.

Taste and See How Much He Loves You
The Holy Communion*

The Great Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.
*or Agape Feast alternative (see below)

Leader: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine.  Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ redeemed by his blood.
By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet.

All: Lord’s Prayer (debts/debtors)

The Words of Institution

Leader: On the night he was handed over to suffering and death , our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you.  Do this in remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me,”

Leader: The gifts of God for the people of God.

The sacrament is received by the celebrant and then by the people.

Prayer of Response

Holy One, to  you I raise my  whole  being
a vessel emptied of self.    Accept, O Lord,
this is my emptiness, and so fill me with
yourself,  your  light,  your  love,  your
life that these  your  precious  gifts
may radiate through me and over-
flow the chalice of my heart into
the hearts of all with whom I
               come in contact this day
                 revealing unto them
                        the beauty of
                          your joy
                            and
                      wholeness
                       and the
                        serenity
                     of your peace
         which nothing can destroy.
(Francis Nuttall, The Prayer of the Chalice)

Let us Go Forth in the Name of the Lord

The Blessing:

Leader: Let us bless the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.
Thanks be to God- Creator, Redeemer, and Giver of Life.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all forever.  Amen.

We go in peace to love and serve the Lord, and to live our lives so that those to whom love is a stranger will find in us generous friends.

(Excerpts from Celtic Daily Prayer, Northumbria Community,
Daily Prayer Breviary and Book of Common Prayer)

we used the water and bread yesterday since Mike was not with us.... May you share water and bread together this week too reminding each other that Jesus is indeed the bread of life and is the living water...

Bread is broken and passed.

Passing of the Cup
Leader:            Jesus said, "Whoever drinks the water I give them will never be thirsty.  The water I give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life."  (John 4:14)

Blessed art thou, O Lord, God of the universe, who brings forth water from the earth.

Water is poured from a pitcher into a communal chalice or individual cups and passed.

Leader:            By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet.
