community and a rite of passage

a devotion I read yesterday that reminded me of you....

We are bound together that no man can labor for himself alone. Each blow he strikes in his own behalf helps to mold the universe. -Jerome K. Jerome

Bear one another's burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.  Galatians 6:2

Let's be intentional about seeking community. When we fall, let there be hands behind to catch us. And when others fall, let's help them soften the landing.
There are times for striking out on our won, as Christ did in the wilderness, but we mostly read about him surrounded by twelve followers, twelve friends. Let's find community and do the same.
-Joshua DeBois The President's Devotional

and a little window into a rite of passage for Anna yesterday
Since Anna was little, I have told her that she could get her ears pierced when she turned 13.  She has been asking about it for the last 6 months or so, and I've continued to tell her that we would get to do this when her birthday rolls around.  But I surprised her yesterday that she could finally join the club because it was the 13th (and you know how I am about the 7th, the 13th, the 23rd and the 28th!).   And on top of that, I knew that it would be awesome to get to take her to the same place where I got my ears pierced 29 years ago (and I knew it would mean a lot to my mom to share in this surprise).  What FUN!!

picture taken right after we let her in on the secret about it being the big day to get her ears pierced.  (She was shocked and a wee bit nervous!)
